MEN'S HAIR AND BEARD GUIDE

Increasingly, in an age where men take more care over their style and appearance, there has been an emergence of dudes really experimenting with their hair/beard fashion. From being a guy who used to do nothing with his hair, to someone who takes time and care with his hair and beard styling, I thought I'd write an easy-to-follow guide on how to get on top of your hair/beard game!

Hair:

1) First port of call is visiting this youtube channel - Slikharr TV. It's the place that first got me into the different possible hair styles and hair fashion. It includes all the most up to date and fashionable men's hairstyles. Watch videos on hair tutorials that you like the look of:

2) Things to take note of when trying to pick a new style: What shape is your head/face? What is your hair like (thin, thick, curly ... bla bla bla)? What length of hair do you want (short, medium, long)? How much maintenance are you willing to put in?

3) From here, pick a few styles that you could potentially do. Watch the tutorials on how they are styled. Listen to the measurements the Slikharr TV guys give such as: " A 0.5 on the side blended up to a 3". Remember these measurements and also (this is essential) ... TAKE SCREENSHOTS/GET PICTURES ONTO YOUR PHONE OF WHAT YOU WANT YOUR HAIR TO LOOK LIKE.

4) Now, this probably isn't everyone's usual preference, but I urge you to go to a (unisex) hairdressers. This might be stereotyping, but I simply have greater faith in a girl giving me a fashionable cut than a barber. (PLUS, its always more enjoyable having good looking women handling your hair!) Make sure the place you go to is of good quality. Paying £13-20 range shouldn't be unusual. For those of you on Ecclesall Road, Sweeney4 (located next to collegiate campus) is perfectly cheap enough, with helpful staff and delivers great results.

5) Show your hairdresser the pictures and mention measurements. From that point say to her:
'That's the general idea... but please make any adjustments if you think something else could look better'.
At the the end of your haircut, she will start blow-drying it, combing it, putting product in your hair etc... WATCH EXACTLY what she is doing and ASK her to explain how she is doing it, and what products you'd need to buy to replicate how she styled it.

6) From here, go home and try and copy what she did to your hair. EXPECT to be buying some products you aren't used to such as: hair dryer, small hair brush, volume mousse, hair spray and hair product.
When it comes to hair product, please buy CLAY or WAX. Gel just screams 10 year old kid. If you want to get really into it ... buy the more expensive clay/wax from the hairdressers themselves that they use (most supermarket hair products are utter crap!).

Beard:

1) For the most part, unless you're growing a monster hipster beard, you're just going to want to keep it to stubble or a shortish, well kept beard. The following trimmer by gillette on amazon will do the job fine. Easy to travel with as well and has adjustable trimmer lengths:

I challenge anyone who wants to reinvent their hair/beard look to follow these simple steps and not getting an improvement. Hope this helps and good luck lads!
