We’ve
all been there. Opened our wardrobe to find four t-shirts. Those same four
T-shirts that you rotate carefully every week in the hope that nobody on your
course notices that you in fact only have, four T-shirts, and when you finally
head of to meadow hall to update your woefully small wardrobe you find exactly
what you already own in Topman, H&M, River Island, and Allsaints to name
but a few high street shops.
So
here at SHUMan we’ve decided to give you a helping hand in updating those old,
over worn tees, by creating a list of some our favorite independent clothing
brands and outlets that sell the most original apparel on the internet, and In
Sheffield.
XCVB
Where:
www.XCVB.co.uk
Cost:
£10 - £30
XCVB
was established in 2011 in Sheffield when two friends had hit a fork in the
road, one had lost his job, the other’s gambling ‘career’, shall we say had not
gone to plan. After scraping together what little money they had, maxing out
their overdraft and one credit card, XCVB was born.
We love the unique designs
printed on the tees, they’re perfect for sitting in a lecture theatre, or
having one too many cheeky vimtos at Plug. They also design they’re own hats, sweaters,
jackets, and even sunglasses.
Chain Gang// Mineral - £30
Pannotia
Where:
www.pannotia.co.uk/
Cost:
£17.50 - £28
Pannotia
aren’t just your regular t-shirt designers, they offer quite a bit more. If
you’re into your house, electronic, or techno music then you may have been to
night they’ve hosted in Sheffield, or listened to one of their many mixes on
SoundCloud. These guys have collaborated with some big names such as George
Fitzgerald, Addison Groove, and Paul Woolford.
Some
of their designs are quirky, but you could never accuse them of following the
herd. Although not the cheapest in our list, these tees will certainly have
your mates asking where they can get one. Pannotia have also started to branch
out from tees and now stock some of their own backpacks and sweatshirts, so
keep an eye on this exciting brand.
Spin Vinyl // White - £22
Dope
Chef
Where:
www.chefldn.com
Cost:
£20 - £60
Dope
Chef are a London based fashion brand that have recently undergone a style
overhaul, because, in the words of Dope Chef Co-founder Macharia Brian ‘ the
brand’s got to the stage where we can do what the f**k we want.’ It’s hard to
argue with him after the first wave of Dope Chef clothing attracted a large and
loyal following, including celebrities such as, Ed Sheeran, Harvey (Rizzle
Kicks), and Mikill Pane.
The
new overhaul has the feel of West Coast American Street style clashing with a
Tokyo Urban look. Its certainly a unique look but one that I personally love.
Out with the tie-dye colour-fest and in with a more urban monotone chic that
looks incredible. While you’re looking at their online store check out the
various other clothes and accessories they sell, you won’t be disappointed.

SABBC
Cost:
£10 - £27.99
SABBC
(Skull and Bones Boys Club) are yet another Sheffield based brand, and have
enjoyed quite a bit of success since they began designing. Just like Dope Chef,
SABBC have attracted attention from the music world, most recently Disclosure
were spotted wearing one of their tees during a performance for Radio One.
One
of my favourite things about SABBC, apart from the head turning designs on
their tees, is that they offer a £10 t-shirt lucky dip. Simply tell them your
size, pay £10 and hey presto, they’ll send you a random t-shirt. So if you’re
feeling lucky have a go, it might be the best decision you make all week.
Goth Bones // White - £25
The
Alternative Store
Where:
127 - 129
Devonshire Street, Sheffield, S3 7SB
The
Alternative Store on Division Street is possibly my favourite shop in
Sheffield. I’ve forgotten how many times I’ve been in before a night out and
purchased one of their many tees. To put it simply this is the one stop store
for the best in street, urban, and alternative clothing. They stock an awesome
array of brands from Crooks and Castles to The Hundreds. They even stock some
of the brands on our list.
The shop is
split between two units, one on Division Street, and one inside the Forum
Arcade, and both are ram packed with incredible clothes that aren’t going to
need you to take out a mortgage to buy them.
A New Shop
Where: 25
Division Street, Sheffield
A New Shop is a vintage store at the top of Division Street.
Vintage isn’t everyones cup of tea, but it’s not the fusty clothes that our
grandparents were wearing decades ago that have got A New Shop onto this list.
They stock a wide range of Sheffield based independent clothing brands
alongside their vintage.
One such brand
is Yorkshire Tee. Their collection of Sheffield inspired T-shirts are extremely
original and a steal at only £19.
Hopefully this
article has inspired you to break free of the four plain tees in your wardrobe,
and maybe try something a bit more eye catching. Thanks for reading.
